In gloomy and overcast weather for football the Mass Nutrition Cup was held at Rochester Recreation Reserve on Sunday 15 April. All seven teams from the MBCM Northern Country Women’s League competed along with four of the five teams from the Central Victorian Women’s Football League.
With 19 games of football in a day the event was well attended with the shortened game structure ensuring that all participants and spectators were kept on their toes.
In Pool A on Moon Oval Shepparton, Mooroopna, North Bendigo, Nathalia, Kangaroo Flat and Benalla Saints all played three games each of 13 minute halves whilst over on Windridge Oval in Pool B Strathfieldsaye, Rumbalara, Kerang, Kyneton and Echuca did battle over four games each of 10 minute halves.
Despite some early rain the contest was fierce across the day with Echuca the first to qualify for the Grand Final with a dominated display to remain undefeated in Pool B. The fight for ascendency in Pool A was still alive down to the last game with Mooroopna’s win over Benalla Saints ensuring Shepparton remained the only undefeated side thus winning the group and qualifying for the Grand Final.
The Grand Final was a fitting finale to the day with a high standard and free flowing affair ensuring a quality contest. Shepparton took the lead early and despite a fast finish from Echuca they were unable to bridge the gap and the Bears were victorious by 9 points at the final siren.
Shepparton midfielder Maddie McNeil was a worthy recipient of the Best on Ground Award for the Grand Final.
