After almost 20 years with AFL Victoria, local football legend, GVL Hall of Famer and Football Development Manager, Greg Liddell has announced he will retire as of Monday, March 11.
Greg joined AFL Victoria in 2000 when he was appointed as a Football Development Manager (FDM) in the Sunraysia/Mallee region with what was then Football Victoria. After four years in that role he moved back to the Goulburn Murray region to continue his work as an FDM, which saw him relocate to Shepparton.
Greg has made a significant contribution to AFL Victoria across several areas, both within his role as an FDM and beyond his role where he has supported several AFL programs. As one example, Greg was an Under 16 Victoria Country selector for the National Championships for eight years, which included wins at the National Championships where he worked closely with coaches Leon Harris (2001) and Nathan Buckley (2009).
In 2009, Greg initiated the first Youth Girls team in the Goulburn Murray region at Mooroopna, later Notre Dame and where they played in the Bendigo region which led to the formation of the current youth girl’s competition in the Shepparton DJFL.
Greg established the second Under 15 Goulburn Murray team in the V/Line Championships in 2009 and throughout his time with AFL Victoria, has established strong relationships with a number of stakeholders across community football and has been witness to and part of many positive changes in community football over that time.
Greg moved into the GVFL Dunkirk Avenue Offices in 2002 and was later part of the group that set up the AFL Victoria office at Kialla Park Community Centre, following the formation of Region Commissions and Regional Administration Centres, which is the current home of AFL Goulburn Murray.
He has influenced significant change in the Goulburn Murray region which has included involvement in reviews of junior leagues including Seymour DJFNL, Shepparton DJFL and Kyabram DFNL. More recently, Greg has been involved in the formation of the GMCA coaching strategy and review of junior football across the Goulburn Murray region. He has been a key driver of the AFL GM AFCA branch for many years and made an invaluable contribution to coaching across the region through his passion and commitment to AFCA.
Outside his work with AFL Victoria, Greg was inducted in the Goulburn Valley League Hall of Fame in 2018 which was a significant achievement and recognition of Greg’s contribution to the game.
Across his time at AFL Victoria Greg has been a passionate supporter of AFL Victoria’s programs and community football and will leave a strong legacy on the game when he retires in March.
On behalf of all AFL Goulburn Murray Staff, and the wider AFL community congratulations to Greg on his contribution to AFL Victoria and we wish him well in retirement.
