AFL Goulburn Murray is on the search for our next Regional Director of Umpiring.

Located in Shepparton working out of the AFL Goulburn Murray Regional Administration Centre, this is an exciting role that will work alongside the Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association (GVFUA).

For Australian Rules Football and Netball to be the sports of choice in the Goulburn Murray Region.

Our Mission

To promote, manage and develop Australian Rules Football, Umpiring and Netball in the Goulburn Murray Region through leadership, direction and governance.

Overview of Role 

The Director of Umpiring is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the AFL National Umpire Plan across the Goulburn Murray Region, including:
• Umpiring across the Goulburn Valley Football Umpires’ Association and Partner Leagues.
• The development of umpiring at community level.
• The pathway for umpires into higher competition opportunities.
• Other administrative or project-based duties may also be required from time to time.

In recognition of the seasonal nature of the sports industry, working arrangements must be flexible to meet the needs of the Commission, the GVFUA and our stakeholders. Hours of work can include evenings and weekends, particularly during the season.

Key Responsibility Areas:

Financial

• Develop and manage the Umpire budget in conjunction with the GVFUA Treasurer.
• Manage the umpire payment process in conjunction with AFL GM Consultant Accountant and GVFUA Treasurer.

Communications and Sponsorship

• To assist and service sponsors on behalf of the GVFUA in conjunction with the AFL GM Commercial and Operations Manager.

Staffing

• Consult with the GVFUA Executive to appoint suitably qualified personnel to umpiring coaching positions, including:
• Head Coach
• Fitness Coach(es)
• Boundary Coach(es)
• Goal Umpire Coach(es)

Umpire Performance

• Implement a strategic appointments process incorporating input from coaches, mentors and observers, etc.
• Oversee the overall performance and effectiveness of GVFUA umpires
• Drive performance of umpiring at all levels through the development and management of standardised performance curriculum, measures and strategies

Umpire Recruitment and Retention

• Manage the recruitment of umpires to the GVFUA and broaden the recruitment process to provide a deeper talent pool
• Develop a planned introduction to umpiring with the Director of Umpiring for all new umpires to ensure early experiences in umpiring is positive
• Administer the development of local initiatives that promote the role of umpiring
• Administer the development of strategies that promote umpire respect, inclusion and diversity
• Proactively recruit and manage the umpires with the intention to develop and implement annual recruitment/retention programs
• Manage the AFL GM Diversity Academy and other such development and recruitment activities

Umpire Accreditation and Resources

• Manage the delivery of the national accreditation process for umpires
• Manage the development and dissemination of local resources that support the development and performance of umpires at all levels

Umpire Environment

• Ensure all AFL Codes and Policies relevant to umpires are documented, disseminated and available to umpires at all levels
• Work with AFL Vic, AFL GM and GVFUA to implement education programs for umpires
• Coordinate training and education sessions with member clubs with the aim of improving match day behaviour toward umpires
• Manage the Umpiring Training venue, apparel and equipment

Umpire Research and Evaluation

• Establish and maintain key performance indicators and reporting processes for all Umpire Coaches and provide feedback against the National Umpire Plan
• Establish and maintain data collection processes to ensure the AFL Goulburn Murray identifies and monitors umpire numbers, appointments and subsequent trends

Administration

• Provide the first point of contact for umpiring in all AFL GM affiliate Leagues
• Perform the Secretary role for the GVFUA including taking minutes at meetings
• Ensure all appointments have been accurately entered into Officials HQ
• Ensure the accurate entry and update of all umpiring data in Play HQ
• Coordinate umpiring functions and events in conjunction with GVFUA and AFL GM staff
• Submit Monthly Report to RGM
• Submit Annual Report for AFL GM Annual General Meeting

Match Review Panel (MRP)

• Educate and support GVFUA on the structure and processes associated with the MRP
• Provide issues management support to GVFUA and AFL GM staff as required

General

• Always represent the best interests of football and netball with professionalism and integrity
• Maintain open communication with all internal and external stakeholders including League Executive members, clubs, staff and Commission
• Seek to leverage other opportunities for the benefit of partner Leagues and AFL Goulburn Murray
